Just Breathe…..

Breathing is a function of the body that is both involuntary and voluntary. We breath subconsciously all the time, but we can also take deep breaths or hold our breath. In yoga, breathwork clears the mind, strengthens the immune system, strengthens your lungs, and improves sleep. According to an article in Chopra (2020), breathwork can help calm and focus your mind, and is often used to help people experiencing mental health issues.

In my massage practice, I begin each massage with an inhalation. I have my guests select from three different Plant Therapy essential oil blends: one for relaxation, one that reduces stress and anxiety, and one that is energizing and uplifting. I have them take a few deep breaths in, while holding my hands underneath the face rest. This helps to put them into a more relaxed state, and allows them to experience the benefits of the organic essential oil blends. They also have the opportunity to choose from a plain grapeseed oil for their massage, or the massage oil that also has the blend of essential oils they selected for their inhalation, taking their massage to a deeper level.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil (2022), “Practicing a regular, mindful breathing exercise an be calming and energizing, and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders.” He suggests the 4-7-8 breathing technique, or relaxing breath. It is done by taking a deep exhale to empty your lungs; then take a deep breath in for a count of 4, holding your breath for a count of 7, and exhaling your breath for a count of 8. Repeat for four cycles. This technique can be done anytime you are feeling anxious, and can also be done before bed for a better night’s sleep. When we are stressed or anxious, we often hold our breaths, which deprives the body of oxygen and can decrease our ability to relax. Therefore, we should practice regular relaxation breathing techniques that can help us during stressful times.

Just breathe…
